Veeam Backup and Replication
Backup, restore and replication functionality for virtual machines, physical servers and workstationsVeeam Software has come a long way with their flagship product, Veeam Backup & Replication. Originally built for virtualization, it has since progressed to include physical devices, cloud workloads, and Office 365, among other things. The company pioneered agentless, image-based backups that could instantly recover a virtual machine without having to restore it first.
Veeam also began using Changed Block Tracking to reduce the size and time of backups on top of deduplication and compression. They have also always included replication of virtual machines. Veeam led the industry in offering backup and replication functionality in one product to provide a more complete solution, and the replication happened without having to power off the virtual machine. Over the past 11 years, Veeam has greatly improved the engine and functionality of its replication feature.
As a Veeam Platinum Cloud & Services Provider, Global Data Vault leverages Veeam Backup & Replication for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines (VMs.) We keep backups on premises for the fastest possible recovery and can immediately copy backups of the VMs to our offsite repository or schedule the job for a later time. For replicating VMs, the hypervisor takes a snapshot of the VM and replicates the point-in-time copy of the data to GDV using Veeam Cloud Connect, where it sits as a fully-hydrated VM waiting to be powered on if needed. It is also application-consistent, meaning all in-flight transactions were written before the snapshot happened and the VM and applications will boot correctly. After the first full replication occurs, Veeam Backup & Replication will then only send the blocks of data that have changed since the last replication.
For physical servers and workstations, we use Veeam Agent for Windows and Veeam Agent for Linux and then send those offsite via Cloud Connect. One great advantage is the agents are able to connect to Global Data Vault on their own, so if you have remote offices or workers, the backups can be sent directly from their locations. You can also send them to a home office before copying them to GDV, if preferred.
Global Data Vault services also help with cloud mobility and solutions for workloads running in AWS, Azure, and Office 365.
